esarom was founded in 1946. The company’s roots lie in Germany, in the town of Nördlingen in northern Bavaria, where the Schwäbische Essenzenfabrik Willy Schmitz GmbH was based.

In 1956, Mr. Schmitz decided to open a branch office near Vienna to be closer to his customers and provide them with better service. That was the beginning of activities in Oberrohrbach.

Mr. Schmitz entrusted his son-in-law F.W. Kunze with the development of the branch. The focus was on the production of spirits, rum, spice and confectionery flavours and caramel colouring. Business did not develop as expected and the branch was to be closed again.

However, F.W. Kunze and his business partner Wolfgang Mölls, believed in esarom in Austria and continued to run the branch with 6 employees as an independent company. That was in 1961.

The focus was on the production of stable compounds for citrus lemonades. Kunze and Mölls expected above-average growth in the non-alcoholic beverage sector, and in the 1960s this was indeed the case. Demand for tasty soft drinks increased and esarom was one of the few companies in a position to produce them. The esarom factory in Oberrohrbach established itself as a reliable supplier of raw materials for the non-alcoholic beverage industry.

Today, around 80 years later, esarom is one of the leading suppliers of flavouring ingredients for the global beverage and food industry. With an export rate of over 80 % and a well-connected network, the company is a strong and successful partner in taste.
